I moved north in 1974 and since then have been living on the Pennine hillsides. My writing has been substantially shaped by this landscape and the politics that sprang from it. One Hand Tied Behind Us (Virago, 1978) told the story of the radical suffragists of the Lancashire cotton towns ~ and it quickly became a suffrage classic. More recently, I've also written the history of Votes for Women campaigners across Yorkshire, Rebel Girls (Virago, 2006).

With 2018 centenary celebrations already being planned, it's all the more important to talk about northern suffragettes and suffragists, their aims and their campaigns. How can we learn from their example to make even more great things happen?
